The short answer
- A WhatsApp button is usually a click-to-chat link: wa.me followed by your number in international format, with an optional pre-filled message.
- The WhatsApp Business app is free and suits one team answering by hand. The Business Platform connects WhatsApp to your own systems and charges per message.
- Meta's pricing changes on 1 October 2026: service replies become chargeable after 1,000 free messages per business number each month.
- Analytics can count clicks on the button, not the chats that follow, so add a reference to the pre-filled message.
- Collecting phone numbers and messages is processing personal data under UAE law. Take advice and update your privacy policy.
The simplest integration: a click-to-chat link
The simplest WhatsApp website integration in the UAE is a link. WhatsApp's help centre calls it click to chat. A visitor taps it and a chat with your business opens, without saving your number first. It works on phones and on WhatsApp Web.
The link is https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format. WhatsApp says to omit any zeroes, brackets or dashes. For a UAE mobile written locally as 05X XXX XXXX, drop the first 0 and add the country code 971: https://wa.me/9715XXXXXXXX.
You can add a pre-filled message, which appears in the visitor's text box ready to send: https://wa.me/9715XXXXXXXX?text= followed by the message in URL-encoded form, where a space becomes %20. Arabic text must be encoded too. Your developer's tools do this automatically.
WhatsApp publishes an official Chat on WhatsApp button in green and white, in small, medium and large. It asks you to use the button as it is, without changes. Its help centre notes that the button is currently only available in English, so an Arabic page needs its own label.
Business app or Business Platform
The link opens a chat. What answers it depends on which WhatsApp product you use.
| Feature | WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business Platform |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A free app for Android and iPhone | Programming interfaces (APIs) that connect WhatsApp to your own software |
| Who answers | People, on the app | People, automated flows or both, through your own system or a provider's |
| Typical uses | Business profile, away messages, quick replies, labels and lists | Order confirmations, delivery updates, support routing, CRM links |
| Cost | Free to download | Per message, on Meta's rate card |
WhatsApp notes that one phone number cannot be used on WhatsApp Messenger and the Business app at the same time. Decide which number your website will show before you print it anywhere.
Choose the app while one team replies by hand. Look at the Platform when you need order updates sent by your store, several agents on one number, or chats saved in your CRM. That work is a custom web application project, either direct with Meta's Cloud API or through a provider. Ask any provider what it charges on top of Meta's rates.
How Meta prices the Business Platform
Since 1 July 2025, Meta has charged per message on the Platform. It charges when a template message is delivered. A template is a pre-approved message, and it is the only kind you can send to someone who has not messaged you in the last 24 hours. Rates depend on the template's category (marketing, utility or authentication) and the recipient's country code. Messages that customers send you are not charged.
When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens, and it resets with each new message from them. Until 30 September 2026, your free-form replies within that window are free. From 1 October 2026, Meta will charge for these service messages after a free tier of 1,000 a month per business phone number, and for utility templates sent within the window.
| Category | From 1 July 2026 | From 1 October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing | AED 0.1832 | AED 0.2115 |
| Utility | AED 0.0576 | AED 0.0576 |
| Authentication | AED 0.0576 | AED 0.0576 |
| Service replies | Free within the 24-hour window | AED 0.0576 after 1,000 free a month per number |
Meta also offers a free 72-hour window, but only when the chat starts from a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button. A chat that starts from a link on your website does not open it. Meta says it may change prices on the first day of each quarter, so check the pricing page before you budget.
Measuring chats that start on your website
Once a visitor taps the button, the conversation happens inside WhatsApp, where your website analytics cannot see it. You can measure the tap, not the chat.
- Count the clicks. Google Analytics 4 enhanced measurement records a click event when a visitor follows a link to another domain, with the link's address and domain. Filter for wa.me to see WhatsApp taps by page.
- Label the source. Put a short reference in the pre-filled message, such as the page or offer name. It arrives in your chat, so your team can see where the lead came from.
- Record the outcome. On the Business app, use labels to mark chats as new, quoted or won. On the Platform, send chats to your CRM.
- Compare like with like. Count WhatsApp taps beside calls and emails, so you can see which channel your buyers choose.
Privacy and consent
A WhatsApp chat gives you a phone number, a name and whatever the customer writes. The UAE's Personal Data Protection Law, Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, came into force on 2 January 2022. The UAE government portal says it prohibits processing personal data without the owner's consent, except in some cases, and gives people the right to ask for corrections and to restrict or stop processing. It also sets rules for sending data across borders.
Meta adds its own rule for the Platform. Businesses must get opt-in before messaging people on WhatsApp, state clearly that the person is opting in, and name the business they will hear from.
- Say in your privacy policy that you use WhatsApp, what you keep and for how long.
- Ask before sending offers, and make it easy to stop them.
- Keep health, financial and identity details out of chats where you can.
- Businesses in a free zone with its own data law, such as the DIFC, should check which rules apply.
Design tips for a WhatsApp button
- Put it where the question arises. Beside prices, product details and booking steps, not only in the footer.
- Keep it clear of other elements. A floating button must not cover the cart, the cookie banner or the menu on a small phone.
- Label it. Say what happens: Chat on WhatsApp. On Arabic pages, write the label and the pre-filled message in Arabic.
- Set expectations. Show your reply hours next to the button, and use an away message outside them.
- Give an alternative. Some visitors do not use WhatsApp. Keep a phone number and email on the page.
- Make it accessible. The official example gives the link an accessible name, Chat on WhatsApp, so screen readers announce it.
- Test on real devices. Tap it on an iPhone, an Android phone and a desktop, where it should open WhatsApp Web.
WhatsApp is how our own projects start, and we build it into sites through our web design and development and ecommerce services.
